Chelsea Burnette Article Response 4 Majority of U.S. Public School Students are in Poverty In the article Majority of U.S. Public School Students are in Poverty by Lyndsey Layton, the topic discussed is one that is of the greatest importance for educators in our society. For the first time in over 50 years, the majority of children in the public school system are coming from low-income families. Although previous predictions were made about the majority of children in public schools being from low-income families, the occurrence of the issue is here much sooner than was originally expected. The author points out that although the economy has been recovering, the poverty rate has been increasing instead of decreasing. The problem that arises from children living in impoverished conditions is that they start school already behind, and have the hardest time catching up to the students that come from wealthier homes.
