1 TA: Angela Chang Section: Thu 5-5:50pm HSS 2321 [email protected] OH: Thu 4pm HSS 1145A BIPN 100 PROBLEM SET WEEK 2 GOLDMAN HODGKIN KATZ (GHK) EQUATION 1. Write down the Goldman Hodgkin Katz Equation: (Note: Ca ++ not permeable at rest!) 2. Calculate the resting membrane potential of a cell with the following ion concentrations: V m = 61 * log[(14+200+400) / (6.5+1500+5400)] = -61mV VOLTAGE-GATED ION CHANNELS 3. Voltage-gated Na + channels exist in 3 states. Draw them out: Fast opening, long inactivation period. Positively charged AAs (Lys, Arg) make up activation gate which changes conformation when membrane potential changes 4. Voltage-gated K + channels, compared to Na + channels, are: o Smaller in size o Slower in opening, inactivation, and closing time o Tetrameric structure o Similar inactivation structure 5. Many poisons and toxins inhibit the normal functions of voltage-gated ion channels: o Tetratoxin (TTX): blocks Na + channels. Found in puffer fish. o Saxitoxin (SXT): blocks Na + channels.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
