LET’S LAY OUT THE CONTEXT Almost half the world lives on under $2 a day – the majority of these people are found in developing countries and are exposed to serious health issues with major diseases (HIV, Malaria, TB, the list is long) However, the pharmaceutical industry is stuck in the 10/90 gap the investments into necessary R & D targeting diseases and illness specifically related to poor and low income users/countries is very slight The Bottom of the Pyramid, low income market, is simply not being address –, three possibilities of how this might arise: 1. MNCs wake-up to the huge market opportunity and redirect R&D resources to the bottom market segment (market mechanism) 2. Large emerging nations (Brazil, India, China and South Africa - BICS) may provide solutions through their investments in R&D 3. New technologies of complex networks forming around PPP and PDP
