SINO1002 Introduction to Contemporary China Essay Assignment Due on 13 May 2016 Please select only one of the following topics and write an essay within the required page limits. 1) Lieberthal comments, “But all long-term observers of this remarkable country (i.e. China) know that there are few places in the world for which the phrase ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’ more aptly applies. The past still weighs heavily on the present in such areas as the organization of the state, basic ideas about the nature of political leadership, the nature of the state’s role in the economy, and many deep-rooted notions regarding the state’s relations with society. It is important to understand not only what has changed due to China’s many upheavals, therefore, but also what has proved enduring.” (p. xvii, Lieberthal, 2004 ).” Do you agree with this comment on contemporary China? Please discuss what has changed in China since the economic reform in the late 1970s, and what has proved enduring? Why things have changed or persisted in their way in China? 2) In this course, several movies and documentaries are recommended to you in the syllabus or during lectures. Please select any one movie or documentary recommended to you and write a critical review. When you write the review, make sure that you utilize perspectives, concepts, or analytical frameworks introduced in lectures and assigned readings to analyze the movie, and write the review as an academic paper. 3) Select a country that you are familiar with and compare China with this country.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
