Nitrogen and phosphate balance in a lake (10 marks) As shown in the following Figure 1, the Dian Lake, a lake with surface area of 2.4×10 8 m 2 is fed by a 15 m 3 /s stream that has total phosphorus (TP) concentration of 0.010 mg/L and total nitrogen concentration of 0.10 mg/L. In addition, wastewater effluent from a point source (a wastewater treatment plant) adds 1 g/s of phosphorus and 15 g/s of nitrogen. The phosphorus settling rate (settle to the sediment of the lake, and leave the bulk water of the lake) is at 3.33 m per year, and phosphorus is removed from water by harvesting aquatic plants at a rate of 10, 000 g per day.
