The Team Leader's Role What Do Effective Team Leaders Do? Create the conditions that enable the team to function Build the team's capacity to do its work Coach the team to optimize its performance To create the necessary conditions for effectiveness means to enable the team to function at least at a minimal level of proficiency. The leader's first task is to establish and maintain the conditions necessary for the team to exist and to function. The leader must see that all of these conditions are in place. In other words, the leader must assure that the team has all of the defining features of a work team. Building the team means adding new members to augment the knowledge and skills available in the team. It also means fostering development of the team's shared values, assuring that the team has the teamwork capabilities it.

Competencies for Team Leaders Competencies for Team Leaders: Enabling the Team Enabling the Team 1. Establish and maintain a clear, common understanding of the team's goal. 2. Establish shared responsibility for achieving the goal, or, better yet, mutual accountability for achieving the goal. 3. Assure that the team has sufficient authority to do its work. 4. Establish interdependency of members. 5. Assure defined membership for the team. 6. Keep the team unified, that is, assure that there are no subgroups operating independently of the whole. 7. Tuckman model of team development FORM STROM NORM PERFORM ADJOURN During the stage of forming, the members learn the team's goal and what will be expected of them as individuals. Part of the leader's task during the forming stage is to convince the team members that the team's goal is worthy and that it can be achieved.
