In response to a virus infected cell when natural killer cells find a cell displaying fewer than normal MHC molecules it releases toxic substances which will kill the virus infected cell. Another defense is cytotoxic T cells that are armed with preformed mediators. In both cytotoxic T cells and NK cells when contacting with an infected cell triggers their mediators release. One of these mediators is perforin that makes pores in cell membranes that allow entry of other factors into a target cell to facilitate destruction of the cell. Then granzymes are released and enter target cells through the holes made by perforin. Once inside the target cell granzymes cause apoptosis which causes the target cell to die. Granulysin is also released which attacks and destroys the outer membrane of the target cell. Cytotoxic cells then synthesize and release the cytokines interferon and tumor necrosis factor-a. Interferon prevents replication of a virus by directly interfering with its ability to replicate within an infected cell. It also sends out a signal

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
