I i r a v i a n | 2 NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC RUBBER This article was written by Scott Miller, at Yale University. How the cis-1, 4 configuration of synthetic rubber most closely mirrors the properties of natural rubber is the focus of this article. He divides the article in four main parts. 1) Applications and Properties of synthetic rubber, 2) Chemistry and Manufacturing Processes, 3) Producers, 4) Conclusion. He stars the article by giving a Historical Background of synthetic rubber. Historical Background: Creating of stereoregular polyisoprene (IR) was the goal of many polymer chemists for a century. Chemists identified that isoprene was the building block for natural rubber and for years several attempts were made to create materials with alike properties. Initially, the resulting polymers were unsuccessful to display some of the preferred features of natural rubber because of alterations in microstructure which is were important in polyisoprene’s physical properties. The polymer chains in the initial synthetic were missing Cis- 1, 4 structure of natural rubber backbone. In the mid-1950s Karl Ziegler found catalyst systems for the Polymerization of ethylene, which lead chemists to develop similar catalyst for Isoprene.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
