This is the 1 st of four lectures which progress from the small scale (atomic structure & chemical bonds) to the intermediate scale (biochemical systems for energy acquisition and consumption), culminating with a larger scale (cell structure). These form the basis for the remaining lectures this semester on DNA, genes and inheritance.

Today’s major topics 1) Arrangement of protons, electrons and neutrons in atoms. 2) How the outer electron shell affects chemical bonding. 3) Types and properties of various chemical bonds. 4) Basic chemistry of water. 5) Carbon bonds. 6) How bonds affect chemical structures which in turn dramatically affect their functioning.
