Amanda Montoya University of Miami BME 265 February 2, 2016 BME 265 HOMEWORK 1 Chapter 1 1. Epithelial Membranes can be classified by the shape of the cells into squamous, columnar and cuboidal. Also, epithelial membranes can be classified according to the number of cell layers into simple and stratified. Simple: Squamous Epithelium: Single layer of flattened looking cells. Their main function is in diffusion and filtration. This type of epithelium can be found in capillary walls and alveoli. Being a single, simple and thin layer of cells give these epithelium de advantage of having a great surface area and to easily allow transmembrane movement. This comes in very handy in places where rapid diffusion or filtration takes place; for example, the alveoli in the lungs. Cuboidal Epithelium: Single layer of cube shaped cells. Their main function is in excretion secretion and absorption. Simple cuboidal epithelium is found in the lining surface of small excretory ducts in various organs and glands in the body, compose some of the kidney tubules in the cortex of the kidney, and create the covering of the ovaries. Because of their shape simple cuboidal cells give more protection towards bacteria and foreign particles. Also, it prevents from excessive water loss. This makes it vary functional in certain organs like the kidney tubules. Columnar Epithelium: Single layer of tall columnar looking cells. Their main function is in protection, secretion and absorption. Simple columnar epithelial cells are some of the most prolific cells in the body, mainly because they can fulfill so many functions. They are found throughout the body's organ system, including the digestive tract and the female reproductive system. Because of their shape, this type of epithelium is special for protection. For example, in the stomach the epithelium provides an impermeable barrier against any bacteria that could be ingested but is permeable to any necessary ions. Ciliated Columnar Epithelium: Single layer of column shaped cells that are ciliated. This epithelium is found mainly in the tracheal and bronchial regions of the pulmonary system and also in the fallopian tubes of the
