Chapter 2: Culture Culture:  system of knowledge, beliefs, patterns of behavior, artifacts and institutions that are  created, learned, and shared by a group of people -  Culture seen as a manual for understand- ing and interacting with the people and world around us - it is learned, not inherited  Enculturation:  process of learning culture; informally or formally  Enculturating:  process of teaching culture  Norms:  rules for behavior  Values:  fundamental beliefs about what is important  Symbol:  something that stands for something else  Mental maps of reality:  “maps” humans construct of what kinds of people and things exist  >brain creates shortcuts to navigate and organize overwhelming amounts of info >shaped through enculturation (process of learning culture)  >classify reality  >assign meaning to what has been classified  Race assumed to have a biological basis - no scientific basis in reality  Classifications created by our culture and are specific to our culture  Goals of Anthropology:  -broaden our worldview (destroy ethnocentrism)
