Organizational Behaviour Anthony Psycharis Class Notes Chapter 5 Motivation: Four basic characteristics of work motivation - Effort How hard a person works to perform their chosen behaviour - Persistence Persistence of a person performing their duties - Direction Company & employee goals align - Goal Behaviour contributes to achieving goal Extrinsic & Intrinsic Motivators: - Intrinsic o Doing an activity for its own sake, cause you like it o The activity itself is interesting and fun for some individuals o I.e. feeling of achievement, challenge and competence - Extrinsic o Doing the activity to obtain the desired outcome such as a reward or the avoidance of a punishment o I.e. pay, evaluation, deadline, threat, fringe benefits o *Having extrinsic motivators reduces intrinsic motivators Self-Determination Theory: - Controlled Motivation When people are motivated to obtain a desired consequence OR an extrinsic reward - Autonomous Motivation Leads to better performance especially creative tasks with higher engagement and commitment retention Motivation & Performance: - Performance the extent to which an organizational member contributes to
