S o c i a l M a r k e t i n g P a g e | 2 Social Networking is defined as the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself. Social networking is ultimately done through Social Media. Social Media are the actual websites and applications people use to network. We most people think of social media they think of connecting with people, sharing their lives with whomever is willing to listen, locating family and friends; however when I think of social media I think business! Social media is now the trend. And for businesses it represents a marketing opportunity that transcends the traditional middleman and connects companies directly with customers. This is why nearly every business on the planet—from giants like Starbucks and IBM to the local ice cream shop—are exploring social media marketing initiatives. Much like email and websites first empowered businesses, social media is the next marketing wave. Behind every great marketer is the science of marketing and social media, with strategies, principles and techniques that are continually evolving. Professionals must not only keep pace with the latest tools and technologies — which enable them to target their communications and keep track of how (and how many) people respond — they must be communication experts who understand the importance of listening and observation.
