Writing Assignment #1 Company/Grad School Research Report & Oral Briefing The Situation This is an individual assignment in which you will write a brief, research-based report and prepare a two- to three-minute briefing (in the form of a narrated PowerPoint presentation or video presentation). This assignment involves doing research and gathering information about companies or graduate schools you might want to attend. You’ll also be gathering that could help you complete your Job Application Portfolio (the next major writing assignment in this course). For this research report assignment, you must research two target organizations. These might be companies in which you are interested. They might also be graduate schools in which you might be interested. You might even research a company and a graduate school. The information you uncover will help you to understand your specific audience's perspective. You will learn more about the organizations and how you might fit in with them. In addition, you’ll gain important, broad industry information, which is vital to anyone in the job-searching process. The Written Assignment The first thing you’ll do is complete the questionnaire about the two companies. Use any means at your disposal to get all of the questions answered – the resources in the handout entitled “Resources for Investigative Report,” the company’s website, a telephone interview with someone in the company, etc. Do not simply visit the organization’s website and tell me that you cannot find answers to all of your questions there. Do what it takes to get responses to all of the questions. Write a short report in memo format (see the list of what to include below under “The Format”). You should include, as your primary audience, other people who are interested in companies or graduate schools in which you are interested. You should include me (and perhaps others) as secondary audience members. You must ensure that you provide enough information so that we have the facts to understand the type of organization that you are targeting and how they might be relevant to you and to your particular audience . “Contextualize” this information with a summary of why you have chosen these companies and why you think you and the audience for your report could fit into their corporate cultures. Cite all of your sources for information properly on a separate reference page. The website URL is not a proper citation. Note any personal interviews or phone calls. Use APA or MLA format to cite your sources correctly. (If you do conduct a personal or telephone interview, you should write a short letter, or email, of appreciation afterward. This is the professional thing to do.) The Format Use a memo format and present the information in accordance with our class discussions. The length should be about 3 single-spaced pages, plus attachments (such as the questionnaires and other items you might find appropriate). Follow the advice in the required readings such as the Details You Really Need to Know:

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
