Participant Objectives The purpose of this presentation is to explain the causes of nursing shortages. In light of the general population living longer, nursing services will continue to grow. Participants will be able to comprehend causes of nursing shortages and apply retention strategies to utilize in the healthcare setting.
Article 1 Nursing Statistics Registered nurses one of the top occupations expected to grow through 2022 Expected to grow from 2.71 million in 2012 to 3.24 million in 2022 An increase of 19% or 526,000 positions needed Replacement nurses in the workforce totaling 525,000 are needed in addition to the 1.5 million needed by 2022
Article 2 Business Focuses on a very current topic. With the Affordable Care Act in place healthcare reform is expected to rise Shortage of faculty is preventing nursing schools from meeting high demand thus contributing to the nursing shortage. Resources such as tuition reimbursement and training hospital nurses as educators can assist in alleviating this need.
