Chemistry 14CL Winter 2016 Practice Problems for Final Exam Final Exam on Monday March 14 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm in CS 50 NO Re-grade for Final & NO MAKE- UP EXAM. You are allowed to use ONE “cheat” sheet (8.5” X 11”) for the exam (Note: you may write anything on BOTH sides of the “cheat” sheet). NO OTHER MATERIALS WILL BE ALLOWED (including lab manual and lab notebook) Make sure you bring a calculator (check the batteries) NO Re-grade for Final Bring a Calculator & your student ID to the exam. The final exam will be cumulative (i.e. include ALL the experiments and topics that covered in Lectures). Make sure that you review all the concepts discussed in lectures and also in the pre-lab and post-lab reports for the exam. 1. (a) Sketch the 13 C DEPT spectra for these molecules shown bellow. CH 3 CH 3 CH 3 -C-OH OH H C 6 H 5 C O O C 6 H 5 C C 6 H 5 -C-C(CH 3 ) 3 O I II III IV (b) What ion masses would you look for in the mass spectrum for each of these compounds? 2. (a) How many NMR signals in the 13 C decoupled-proton NMR will you expect for methyl acetate and 2-pentanone? (b) Give approximate range of chemical shifts for the signals in part (a). (c) Which DEPT spectrum will not be useful for these two molecules? Explain. 3. How many signals do you expect in the 13 C NMR spectrum of the following compounds? (a) CH 3 COOCH 3 (b) CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 COCH 3 (c) CH 3 CH 2 COCH 2 CH 3 (d) (CH 3 ) 2 CHOCH(CH 3 ) 2 (e) C 6 H 12 4.
