Name: page # _____ ESM 186 -Study Question Set #1 (5 % of total points) Short answer questions: 1. Define the terms: radiance and reflectance, specular vs diffuse reflectance, transmission and absorption? Radiance – the amount of light that hits a target or sensor that originates from another object Reflectance – the ratio of the amount of light leaving a target to the amount of light hitting the target Specular reflectance – is the mirror like reflection of light off a surface. The incoming radiation is refracted at the same angle with respect to the nadir. Diffuse Reflectance – Light is reflected at many angles, doesn’t follow the rules of specular relectance 2. What wavelengths are described in remote sensing studies by the following electromagnetic radiation terms: near-infrared, shortwave-infrared, thermal-infrared, microwave Near-infrared is above the visible spectrum and consists of waves 700nm to roughly 1.3µm. This uses a near infrared, greed and red band. Shortwave-infrared consists of waves 1.4 – 3 µm and uses infrared, near infrared and green bands.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
