Privacy Act The Privacy Act of 1974 was created to safeguard citizen’s identities. The purpose is to protect records like names, social security numbers, or any other forms of identity. “No agency shall disclose any record which is contained in a system of records by any means of communication to any person or another agency, except for the written consent from the individual to whom the record pertains” ( Lee, B. E., Scott, L. K., 2015)Below are descriptions of the Privacy Act of 1974. All individuals are entitled to access his or her records as prohibited by the Privacy Act. Prohibits disclosure of records without written consent, with the exception of twelve disclosure exempts. Requires an agency to publish in the Federal Register a system of records. Binds only federal agencies and covers only records in the possession and control of federal agencies.
