Name: Edreih Aldana Lab: Lab #3, Chemical Composition of Cells, test for proteins Due Date: 09/26/15 Purpose The main purpose of this experiment was to learn more about the chemical composition of organic macromolecules. Several solutions were tested with a biuret reagent to determine if they contained protein. Introduction Proteins are complex molecules that play essential roles in the body. They are responsible for doing most of the work in cells. In fact, they are required for the regulation, function, and structure of the body’s tissues and organs (National Library of Medicine, 2015). Proteins are made up of 20 different monomers, also called building blocks, or amino acids. The sequence of amino acids in a protein help determine the protein’s specific function, chemical properties, and structure. Amino acids are joined together by the linking of a carboxyl group and an amino group between two amino acids. The covalent bond that is formed between these is called a peptide bond and when multiple amino acids are joined by peptide bonds, a polypeptide is formed (Brooker, 2014). In this experiment, a variety of solutions will be tested with a biuret reagent to determine if they contain protein or not. Since biuret’s reagent reacts with the peptide bonds found in proteins, the solution will turn purple if the test is positive for containing protein. The solution will remain light blue if

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
