Name: Edreih Aldana Lab: Lab #18, Gel Electrophoresis Due Date: 11/21/15 Purpose The main purpose of this experiment was to learn about the gel electrophoresis process by conducting a mock criminal investigation, analyzing the data, and interpreting the results. Introduction Gel electrophoresis is a process that is used to separate DNA as well as RNA and proteins. Molecules are separated by using an agarose gel and a buffer that conducts electricity. Agarose gel is made from highly purified seaweed and is very porous, which aids in moving the DNA molecules through it (DNA Learning Center). The separation of DNA fragments is based on the size of the fragments. Due to DNA being a negatively charged molecule, it can be pulled through the gel through an electric field. The positive electrode is placed at the bottom of the gel to allow for the separation of the DNA by pulling it through the agarose gel. In this experiment the sources of the DNA came from blood left behind at a crime scene and cheek swab DNA samples collected from two principal suspects. The process of gel electrophoresis was used to separate the fragments of DNA by size to create a DNA profile that contained several markers.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
