What is meant by media criticism? Identify and discuss some of the news analyses, discussions and or projections that have tended to interrogate the performance of the media in Kenya. Introduction Marshal Mcluhan (1964) describes a medium as that which mediates our interaction with the world or other human beings. It is through media that we receive information be it current happenings or otherwise. These media can be radio, television, print and social media (internet). Lemert (1989) analyses what criticism is using brown’s (1974; 17-20) definition. “Criticism of media should be based on shared standards and values established ahead of time, they should be visible and known to the public, the critic and those to be criticized. Additionally, the criticism themselves should be made public as well as the methodology used to do the analysis and reach the critical conclusions” Criticism about media has been easy to find as long as there has been media purporting to tell us about our world, adding that that what is being said about media sounds much the same over the years. A further analysis by lemert that through out media history, it is easier to find critical statements in regards to the media but what we lack is the understanding of the standards, values and methods in which the art of critiquing lies. Lemert(89). In Kenya, these standards and values are set on the Kenyan constitution chapter 4, part 2 section 34 (media freedom) Our view is that there is need for criticism by outside parties (other than the media) because over the years self examination through internal methods of criticism such as the ombudsman and the communications commission of Kenya have met resistance from the journalist themselves especially when the results are shared with the public. For example Ciku Muiruri who used to broadcast a radio show on radio Africa group, with a segment dubbed busted whereby she was

accused of purporting to casually, recklessly and negligently disclose the HIV status of an alleged cheating spouse through the show(ALP vs Classic FM and Ciku Muiruri). The media has a rule ensuring they broadcast programs that do not encourage stigma and discrimination against PLHIV’s (people living with HIV). The hearing at the Media Council complaints commission started in June 2011, both parties giving their evidence. The ruling was given on 12th April 2012. The Commission found that Classic 105 FM and Ciku Muiruri, had breached the Media Act and sections 8.12 and 13 of the code of conduct for the practice of journalism and fined the respondents ksh.800, 000. Classic Fm has since applied for judicial review. Lemert notes that many of the critics are normally misplaced as they may come from partisan of the political and are focused on whether the media is or isn’t covering their side.
