2 The Gilded Age Who was Mark Twain? He was a famous author who wrote several American novels that are now considered classics. All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure- Mark Twain. This quote describes his exact view point of events that occurred during his lifetime. He strongly felt like the greed and political corruption was to blame for why things were the way they are. “His illustrations of the American experience remain equally celebrated and controversial, and many of his observations could be considered eerily valid even today” (“Unit 1 Lesson”, 2016). The political corruption was failing everyone but the political parties creating the laws and acts. After the Civil War ended the economy experience rapid growth, creating new opportunities for employment. These opportunities were in mining and trade in the west. It seemed great at first because they only had one thing on their mind, money. With the growth, new products and technologies became available such as railroads and telephone lines. This was improving the quality of life for the middle class. Americans realized the value of the hide on
