HST318 Spring 2016B Unit 3 Discussion Posts Prompt 1 Edison’s success with the electric light is often reduced to the discovery of the carbon-filament light bulb. Yet without creating an entire system, his invention would not have led to the creation of a whole new industry. Besides the carbon-filament light bulb, what element of Edison’s light would you consider most essential? Explain why. Edison's primary contribution to the his success as an inventor and the lightbulb system was the threaded base of the bulb and the threaded socket it screwed into. It's hard to imagine how a lightbulb would be installed otherwise when you think about it, mainly because you have to ask how would you maintain constant contact to complete the circuit of electricty. As mentioned, there's a lot of debate about Edison being credited with the invention of the carbon-filament light bulb and so we go back to his actual invention, the threaded socket. Prompt 2 Identify two ways in which Nikola Tesla's difficulties from 1900 to 1905 were characteristic of

Unformatted text preview: the challenges independent inventors faced more generally (2-4 sentences) and two way in which his difficulties were specific to his individual case (1-3 sentences). The usual issue with coming up with new inventions is funding. It takes time (and money) to come up with a new idea and then to get it working (materials, power, whatever else you need that costs time and money). Tesla’s specific issue was that his invention was on such a grand scale it was difficult for him to demonstrate it and thus difficult for him to convince investors to keep investing as well as get new people to invest. This was compounded by the fact that Marconi was able to get a demonstration (however “insignificant”) going in a relatively short time and Tesla kept stalling even though it was his original idea. So you have the investors (Morgan) going “Marconi did it… why haven’t you?”....

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
