Heather Sutcliffe EBP Background information on blood transfusions. Blood transfusions are the most commonly performed procedure in the United States. There is no scientific evidence that blood transfusions outside of traumatic blood loss are effective. The safest blood transfusion is no blood transfusion. Nurses can reduce the risks related to blood transfusions by performing blood management at bedside. o Blood management: Defined as a patient-centered standard of care in which strategies and techniques are used to reduce, eliminate, or optimize blood transfusions to improve patient outcomes. Consists of prevention, early identification, and treatment with the best possible transfusion practices. Blood management is a comprehensive strategy that conserves the patient’s blood and contributes to better outcomes. Supply and Demand of Blood products o Despite there being a surplus of blood donation, there is still a shortage of blood. o As the population ages, demand is expect to increases and donations are expected to decrease. This problem will only increase as the population is aging.
