Heather Sutcliffe Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic, prevalent and debilitating disorder diagnosed on the basis of persistent and developmentally inappropriate levels of over activity, inattention and impulsivity. It is a child-hood onset, clinically heterogeneous disorder that impairs the brain’s self-management system includes problem getting motivated, organized and started on necessary tasks; focusing on what needs to be attended to; managing alertness and sleep; and sustaining effort to complete tasks; processing and outputting information efficiently; managing emotions; using short-term working memory; and monitoring one’s actions to fit the setting and avoid excessive impulsivity. The etiology of ADHD is not completely understood. “Although rare cases have a single cause such a lead exposure, generalized resistance to thyroid hormone, head injury, and frontal lobe epilepsy, most cases of ADHD are probably caused by a complex combination of risk factors (Biederman, 577).” Genetic factors are though to play an
