2. Explain why reflexes are important to the body. Reflexes are important to the body because they are quicker reactions to different stimuli, causing less damage to the body. The reason for these quicker reactions is because the nerve impulses skip the brain, and go through the spinal cord instead, meaning that you don’t have to think about what to do. This generates a much quicker response. A common example of a reflex is touching a hot stove. Your pain receptors send an impulse to the sensory receptors which pass the impulse to the spinal cord, which then moves to the motor neurone, and ends in the effector. This causes much less damage to the hand than if the impulse went to the brain. 3. Describe how the three reflexes tested in the investigation might protect the body: Pupillary Reflex: The pupillary reflex protects the eye from long term light damage by constricting the pupil to reduce the amount of light that enters the eye.
