Name: Jen Warren Date: June 5, 2015 ISSC340 Week 1 Assignment (3% of Grade) Lesson 1 Review: Overview of Local Area Networks The purpose of this activity is to reinforce what you have learned so far about local area networks technologies. 1. What are the main architectural components of a LAN? (Minimum word count: 60) The six main architectural components of a LAN are as follows: The physical topology which is how the nodes are connected. Then you have the access method, which is how the nodes access the transition medium. The transmission technique is the type of method used for the information to pass through the network. Transmission media, meaning whether or not it is wired or wireless. The protocols, which are the rules of how communication will take place. And finally, the interconnectivity. This is how the LAN will share its information with other types of networks.

Unformatted text preview: Describe the function and characteristics of a network operating system (NOS). (Minimum word count: 100) A network operating system can run and manage a network for multiple computers. Unlike a typical OS, a NOS consist of both a server and a client instead of just a client. This way multiple clients can have access to the same information that lives on just one server. For example, in an office setting one person can make changes to a file and the rest of their co-workers will see these changes the next time they open that file off of the server. It also makes it so that multiple clients can have access to the same printer servers and share internet access. A NOS also implements network security. 2.
