PB 3 Using one or more examples, explain functions of two hormones in human behaviour. Hormones are chemicals that are released by glands in the endocrine system that act as messengers to particular cell and organs, can also affect human behaviour. Hormones largely affect physiology and psychology thus affecting behaviour. Because it is released in the blood stream, it is slower acting changing behaviour than neurotransmitters. Two examples of hormones are melatonin and cortisol. Melatonin – Wehr et al (2008) A – compare the night time melatonin secretion of patients with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) with normal subjects M – 55 SAD patients paired with 55 normal patients, melatonin in plasma samples were recorded every 30 minutes for 24 hours in constant dim light in the season of winter and summer. R – SAD patients duration of melatonin secretion was longer in winter than summer but healthy patients secretion was constant C – SAD patients generate biological signal of change of season that does not occur in healthy people.
