When Marx and Engels compare the bourgeois society to a “Sorcerer who is no longer able to control the powers of the nether world whom he has called up by his spells,” they are making two claims about the bourgeoisie. The first, which is addressed in the first half of Chapter I of the Communist Manifesto, is that the bourgeoisie actively moved society towards the world of free trade and industry that it is. This is implied by the phrase “The world whom he has called up by his spells.” They say that the bourgeoisie “Has played a most revolutionary part,” and “Has set up that single unconscionable freedom – Free Trade.” This new class was not simply a reaction to the new developments, technological and otherwise, of the society, but actually was a driving force in these changes. “Constantly changing the instruments of production,” they say, is a necessary component of the bourgeoisie.
