Psychopathology 2 Perceptions and Causes of Psychopathology Introduction Psychopathology is defined as the study of psychological and behavioral dysfunction occurring in mental disorder or in social disorganization. It is also seen as the disordered psychological and behavioral functioning as in mental disorders. This paper will provide a brief overview of how culture is a factor in determining the expression of psychopathology. Second, one will provide a brief overview of how culture is a factor in determining the expression of psychopathology. Third, one will examine the causes of psychopathology using one of of the psychological perspectives in the text. And finally, the writer will discuss the changes in society’s perception of psychopathology as a function of a historical period. Abnormal psychology is another name for psychopathology. Abnormal psychology is seeks to understand the cause and treatment of mental disorders. Topics and examples of abnormal psychology surround us on a daily basis. There is no single definition that can identify what is abnormal (Berk, 2014). Culture can be a dramatic factor in determining the expression of psychopathology in the world. It should be noted that all cultures have a variety of rules whereas there are others that formalize these rules into laws. An example of this would be that among the Amish, driving a car or watching TV would be considered highly abnormal. Decisions about a personal behavior that is considered out of sorts by society and the public at large. That means that culture heavily influences what is considered normal and abnormal. According to Berk (2014), psychopathology is the field of psychology concerned with the study, assessment, prevention and treatment of abnormal behavior. This phrase was first coined in 1847. The word psyche is Greek for soul, pathos means suffering, and –ology stands for the study of. So psychopathology describes how mental illness begins, the symptoms and how they develop.
