Project -1 AME 3173 (Spring 2016) A recently graduated Mechanical Engineer is working for a company (in the area of Research & Design) that develops new technologies for high speed cookers. The recently graduated engineer is asked to explore the improvement/design of a defrosting plate. Design a defrosting plate to speed up defrosting of flat food items such as frozen steaks and pizzas. 1) Research and learn current defrosting plate(s) available on the market. Importance of the material, shape factor, etc. Pick at least two and no more than three different materials to make the plate. Justify your selection compared to those available on the market. That is, use the type of material, size and thickness of the proposed plate as the parameters. 2) The engineer is planning to test each of the designs using a frozen 1.5 inch thick steak (assume that the thickness of the steak is uniform throughout). The diameter of the steak is approximately 6 inches. The frozen steak is expected to be an initial -20°C at the beginning of the thawing process and 0°C at the end with all the ice melted. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
