Pete Renteria 10588726 AVSC 3600 Professor Shamsy March 15, 2014 Flight 173 Term paper 3 On December 28, 1978 United Airlines Flight 173 crashed into a suburban Portland neighborhood. The DC8 carrying 189 people onboard went down short of the runway after having a landing gear problem. The pilot Captain Malburn Mcbroom decided to abort his approach to land and circle Portland while attempting to troubleshoot the problem. Looking at this accident from the point of view of group dynamics we can evaluate the crew performance, establish the boundaries and roles that each of the crew members played. It is very easy to see the group boundaries in place for the cockpit and not just because there is a cockpit door separating the cabin from the cockpit but because of the unspoken boundary that is just assumed between cabin and cockpit crewmembers just as the cabin crew and ground crew have their own boundaries or groups. In the cockpit it is easy to see who is in charge and that is the Captain. It is important to establish the roles that are in play at all times especially if the rolls change from time to time.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
