Pete Renteria 10588726 AVSC 3600 Professor Shamsy March 29, 2014 Flight 173 Term paper 6 On December 28, 1978 United Airlines Flight 173 crashed into a suburban Portland neighborhood. The DC8 carrying 189 people onboard went down short of the runway after having a landing gear problem. The pilot Captain Malburn Mcbroom decided to abort his approach to land and circle Portland while attempting to troubleshoot the problem. The decision making process can be a very complicated process when it comes to troubleshooting an emergency situation aboard an aircraft, and it can be very difficult to make a decision and implement it but there are several strategies today used in aviation regularly and we will evaluate how the pilots of Flight 173 used any decision making tools or how they could have and what lead to the loss of situational awareness. In 1978 aeronautical decision making was not as well researched or developed as it is today, and we now have tools that could have helped the pilots of flight 173 if used properly. DECIDE is just one model that may be used to help in the decision process.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
