Sheridan Resta Exam 4 Review Questions 1. Adaptive evolution is the process in which the fit between organisms and their environment improves over time. Limitations of the adaptation process include: lack of genetic variation, multiple effects of developmental genes, and ecological trade-offs. 2. A species is a group of populations that can interbreed with one another but are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Species are usually morphologically distinct. Members of a species look alike but look different from members of another species. The limitations of the biological concept of species include: fossils (no record of reproduction), asexual reproduction (bacteria), and organisms that hybridize extensively in nature to produce hybrids. 3. Allopatric speciation is when geographical separation prevents species from mating. When they are reintroduced to each other, they no longer mate. An example of this is the Salamander populations around the Sierra Nevada. Sympatric speciation is when the formation of new species occurs in the absence of geographical isolation. It is commonly seen in plants and less in animals. An example of this is shown with Lake Victoria Cichlids.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
