2/3/2016 1 Lecture 9 CHMY 141 Spring 2016 Orbital Shapes Orbital shapes are important when looking at bonds that form between atoms Bonds are formed by the overlap of atomic orbitals Shapes of the overlapping determine the shape of the molecules Orbital shapes are primarily determined by the angular momentum quantum number, l An orbital is a 3 D plot of ψ 2 which represents the probability density Probability density is the probability per unit volume of finding an electron at a point in space s-Orbitals Spherical in shape Generally represented at 90% probability Radial probability Total probability of finding the electron within a thin spherical shell at a distance r from the nucleus Maximum probability at 52.9 pm Probability tapers off but is never 0

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
