Andrea Pinilla Blake Chapter 2 P16-17: Spanish crown had greater economic expectations and needs than the British, wanted to spread Catholicism after reconquering Spain from the Muslims, and had a much larger indigenous population to work with than the British P21: colonial authorities, the church, and the large landowners ( latifundios are large estates) dominated Spanish America economics, politics, and society. Had mercantilist economy P22: Brazil, unlike Spanish America, had a smaller nomadic indigenous population and did not find mineral wealth in the 16 th century P23: In late 1700s, some Latin Americans were influenced by republican idealism of the American Revolution while others wished to keep old economic and political patterns (the conservative reaction) P24: want for free trade and economic reform, the replacement of the Spanish crown by Joseph Bonaparte, and the recognition of liberal principles in the Spanish constitution by Fernando VII were all contributing factors to the Independence movement.
