POPM 3240*01 February 29, 2016 Ensuring Validity in a cohort study Selection of groups Follow up through time --> follow E+ and E- groups over tgime Objective diagnosis of disease Example cohort study --> Framingham study Began 1948, still ongoing Framingham, MA Small population (~30,000 at onset) Enrol people at 30-62 years of age, all free of heart disease at start of study Sample of 5127 randomly sampled (2,282 men, 2,845 women) D- at start of study Several exposures of interest (smoking, obesity, elevated blood cholesterol, physical activity, etc.) Select a population cohort, divide into multiple exposure groups Single individual may be in multiple exposure groups Initial follow-up period of 20 years Examinations every 2 years, daily surveillance of hospitalizations for coronary events Only one hospital in Framingham --> easy follow-up Gained popularity over time Second population cohort (5100 children and spouses of first cohort, began in 1971)
