POPM*3240 March 16 Critical Appraisal - Systematic process used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a research article in order to assess the usefulness and validity of research findings - Should we take the results from this paper and accept them as proof? Notes on evaluating studies - Evaluate both methodological and non-methodological factors o Methodological – study design, statistical analyses, addressing bias o Non-methodological – relevance, originality, conflict of interest How much influence does the funder have on the study? - Lack of a “gold standard” for evaluating studies o No perfect way to evaluate o Several good guides available though and checklists - Some journals provide structured guidance o Require use of specific checklists Questions We Ask in a Critical Appraisal Relevance - Is the research question relevant to the real world? o Somewhat subjective – some people might find things more relevant than others o Experts will know the literature well and will know if the paper is contributing
