2 Background Swings can be found in most parks. People playing on the swing just needs to rub the ground and make swing moving. As i watch the swing moving back and forth, i notice that the swing seems like it takes same time for a swing to finish a swing with different people such as child and the aged sitting on it. So mass of people has no relation with the time of finishing a swing? What element can change the period of a moving swing? To solve these questions, i did investigation about this topic and i found out that in 1602, Galileo conducted the first pendulums experiment to know whether the period of pendulums are constant 1 . In Galileo’s experiment, it has been proved that pendulum with large angle has identical period to the pendulum with small angle, which means angle of pendulum is not a determination of period. Further investigation on the law of inertia explain why swing and pendulum can move in a constant period. Obviously, only three related elements can have affect on the period of swing, which are mass of the swing, length of the swing and the acceleration of gravity. But which element actually has influence on period? Later, after the compound pendulum period formula was established, it can be concluded that the period can only determined by two element, including length of pendulum and the acceleration due to gravity 2 . Therefore, to prove that mass, in contrast with the length of swing, has no relation with period of swing, i reconstruct the pendulum experiment. Executive summary Since swing and pendulum works in same way, this experiment is operated by imitating the periodical swing of pendulum. This experiment aims to investigate on whether mass and length of the swing are determination of the period of swing and calculate the acceleration of gravity of Sydney with recorded data. In this experiment, all the experimental set up are constructed with normal object but not advanced experimental equipment, therefore, uncertainty is necessary for some specific calculation.
