The Awakening: Characters: Edna Pontellier: -A respectable woman in the late 1800s -Strong sexual desires and has the courage to act on them -Wants to discover her own identity independent of her husband and children -Thought when she got older, her romantic desires would go away -Enamored with a cavalry officer, in love with a man visiting a neighboring plantation in her teens, and infatuated with a tragedian -Saw her marriage as the end of her life -Passion emerges on Grand Isle -The people she meets on Grand Isle awaken her desire and urge for music, sexual satisfaction, art, and freedom that she can’t hide -She acts childlike by harboring unrealistic dreams about the possibilities of a wild adulterous romance -She leaves her kids with her grandmother -The narrator portrays her as selfish at sometimes, but never as shameful and never as wrong. -Questionable whether or not she committed suicide Mademoiselle Reisz: -Unconventional and unpopular older woman -Serves as an inspiration to Edna -Distant and homely
