Dance 101 – Lecture Outline – Week Nine TEXT: CHAPTER SIX – MODERN DANCE VIDEO: POINTS IN SPACE; D-MAN IN THE WATERS; DANCING DREAMS; AN EVENING WITH THE ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER Post Modern Dance Twyla Tharp o Crossover person, contemporary dance and ballet; choreographed for American Ballet Theatre; has had two companies; Broadway’s “Moving Out” (Billy Joel) o Worked with Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan; student of Paul Taylor Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) – chance & indeterminacy; movement for its sake o Enjoyed doing things with chance and indeterminacy The dancers never know what the music is until they perform onstage; have to feel each other’s presence/energy to stay on step o Choreographed not to tell story/express emotion, but to choreograph movement for the sake of movement (he doesn’t want you to know what the dance is about) o He studied with Martha Graham when he came to NY o Uses computerized music and liked combining technology with dance o Collaborated with John Cage
