FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE -As social being, friendships define, for most, important aspects of our self-concepts. -Friends are more than acquaintances -Friendships can be just friends or best friends -Friendships entail honesty and trust between one another. -Some classify their significant other (husband or wife) as their best friend -Akbar (1983) found that roommates had “the closest level of friendship, and both moral and social values played a significant role in self-other attraction.” -Like all relationships there will be tension and conflict CROSS-GENDER FRIENDSHIPS -For both heterosexual and homosexual individuals it is common that they have a friend of the other gender, sometimes a best friend. -Cross gender could cause problems in relationships if they are too close BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND Social Penetration Theory (Altman and Taylor) PASSIONATE AND COMPANIONATE LOVE -Between two people, they shared things with one another about themselves Passionate love -Emotional intensity -Sexuality-sex is one of the things that couples shares an intense connection
