Agha Hussain Goth Lit February 24, 2014 Danel Olsen Horrific Adolescent Sexuality Imagine a scenario in a novel, where the two main teenage protagonists of a novel bask in sexual love and pleasure, doing this in a far off cavern, where their hormones take control, only to be attacked and mutilated by a creature of the unknown, who bares large claws and talons and turns them into mush in a single swipe. This is what the general thought would be amongst people thinking about adolescent sexuality in a horror novel. However, the horror novel genre has so many different dimensions to it in terms of adolescent sexuality. The short stories used in this essay to describe the manners of adolescent sexuality, will be “Elena’s Egg,” by Theodora Goss and “The Sweet Virgin Meat,” by Kola Boof.“ The romance that is prevalent in such novels is either of a deeper realistic formula, or of a darker sadistic manner. “Elena’s Egg” explores a more concise sexual manner of sexual behavior. One could argue that the romance displayed in this novel is more of what you’d find in just a regular romance. The central romance in this short story is between her and art teacher Antal Andrassy. It begins with him just critiquing her work, but goes on to him being “madly in love” with her. At one point, as Elena explains, he says, “That I was the muse, the woman, for whom his soul had always longed” (pg. 61). What makes this story fascinating is how the romance is described in way of art form. “When he touched me—when we made love on the mattress he kept in the studio, for nights when he need to work late—I felt as though I was one of his sculptures, being molded into a more perfect image of herself” (pg. 61-62). It’s expressed in a way of the sexuality being a nuance of the art. The story essentially ends in Antal calling his wife “the muse,” and
