MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE THROUGH GOALS 2 Making Dreams Come True Through Goals As a child, I always dreamed of being a nurse like my grandmother. She was a farmer’s wife and worked the evening shift so she could still take care of the commitments she had on the farm. I remember watching her from the bed as she undressed after work. She would take her nurses cap off and lay it carefully on the mantle. There was something about the symbolism a nurse’s cap that made an impression on me. I passed that goal over to become a wife and mother soon after high school graduation. The dream was always in the back of my mind and after two tragedies in my family and a succession of hospital visits it became a reality. The nurses I came in contact with and most especially the primary nurse my son had, gave me the desire to become a nurse and give back to others as they had so graciously given to me and my family. I started out with one class and felt overwhelmed as I tried to work, do homework, and take care of my now eighteen year old son that was now learning how to walk, eat, and build up his strength. When I wanted to give up my children encouraged me, and a PACU nurse of my son’s told me to bring a disk and my books when my son had surgery. She put me in her office, and I did homework while my son was in surgery. When it was over, she would come and get me. Just another way that a nurse made a difference in my life and helped me see that my dream was indeed possible. What I did not realize then was I got through that time by setting goals and following them through to the end. “Effective goal setting is an important practice management tool and a personal development strategy that many individuals credit for their success” (Hills, 2011). “Personal and professional goals can be used to motivate, build confidence, and chart progress” (Cox, 2011).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
