STAT 401 Spring 2016 1 Homework #5 To get full credit show all work! Section 3.4 # 2, 4, 6, 8 Note: Find the probabilities in #2(c) BY HAND and show details. In this problem you can use the table if appropriate, but not R. Problem A: A random sample of 20 parts from a metal punching process are selected every hour. Let X denote the number of parts in the sample of 20 that require rework. A process problem is suspected if X exceeds its mean by more than three standard deviations. a) Typically, 2% of the parts require rework. Find the probability that a process problem is suspected. b) Suppose the rework percentage increases to 5%. Find the probability that a process problem is suspected in this case. c) If the rework percentage is 5% as in b), find the probability that a process problem is suspected in at least one of the next five hours of samples. (Assume that samples in different hours are independent.) Problem B: In a video game a player contests a series of opponents and has an 80% chance of defeating each one. Success with any opponent is independent of the previous encounters.
