Student X February 8, 2016 Word Count: 825 The Brazilian Silent Decides to Speak “Of course I see myself as a hardworking and dedicated person. This is something we praised back in my days!” exclaimed Helena Marcia, the interviewee of this week’s article about a generation’s characteristics and generational theory. Generational theory, according to Graeme Codrington in his article “Detailed Introduction to Generational Theory,” asserts that “the era in which a person was born affects the development of their view of the world.” But can we apply that theory to a 75-year-old woman from the northeast of Brazil? Did the same events that shaped Codrington’s Silent Generation, the ones born between 1920 and 1945, impact her life? How much does she relate to the Silent values? This week’s interview was a special interview to me. I got the chance to interview my 75- year-old grandmother Helena Marcia, who was born in the big metropolitan city of Recife- in Pernambuco- just by the beautiful Brazilian northeastern coast. She grew up not too many blocks away from where she saw her two daughters growing up and where she lives today. The widow had a happy and privileged childhood, watched closely by her father who was a professor in a state university and her mother who was a teacher in an elementary school. “My parents’ careers
