Example Introductions Alan Parry February 17, 2016 In the following, I give 3 examples of introductions. All of which are pretty good, but are missing aspects of the introduction goals that I mentioned in my email. Below each example, I will give details of what I think is good and bad about each introduction. Hopefully, this will give you an idea of what to look for as you write your introduction and critique each others’ this week. Remember the 4 things that make a great introduction are: 1. It gives context for the topic, whether historical, cultural, or mathematical, to explain where the topic came from and what its status is now. 2. It explains why the topic is important in light of the discussed context. 3. It details the point of the current paper and what that paper adds to the general discussion about that topic. 4. It ends with an “umbrella” statement which explains how the paper is organized section by section. Example 1 Consider the following example introduction from a paper on game theory.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
