“Entrepreneurial activity in a colonial setting: the rise and fall of the Jewish Dominion Manufacturing Company Ltd, 1937 - 1956” Evangelia Mathopoulou 1 Abstract In August 1936 a family of Jewish entrepreneurs from Palestine established the Dominion Manufacturing Company in British Cyprus in order to gain access to the preferential trade zone. Benefiting from the low tariff policy in the intra - colonial trade, the company set up industrial plants exclusively for the production and export of buttons to the British markets. Based on the case study of the Jewish business activity in Larnaca during the 1930s, the working paper seeks to unfold the role of protectionism in the enhancement of entrepreneurial ventures in British Empire, as well as in the acceleration of industrialization. In addition, the paper touches upon the performance of the company in the 1930s and 1940s flagging up the transient character of this specific entrepreneurial practice in a colonial setting and its heavy dependency on the world economic fluctuations during and after the WWII. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
