REVIEWS OF BOOKS MIGEOTTE (L.) Les finances des cités grecques: aux périodes classique et hellénis- tique . Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 2014. Pp. 770. €59. 9782251444918. doi:10.1017/S0075426915000683 Migeotte draws upon his 40-year engagement with the field of ancient finance to produce a substantial study spanning the Greek cities across 500 years. As he remarks (13), no full synthesis of the evidence has been attempted since A. Andreades’ 1933 A History of Greek Public Finance (Cambridge MA), and the landscape has since changed considerably, not only in the quantity of primary evidence now available but in the way scholarly thinking about the Greek economy has changed. With two important exceptions, the chapters are organized by theme rather than by city, allowing for a continuous comparison of each structure or process between as many states as the evidence allows. Stressing that the overriding authority of the council and the assembly meant that the political and the sacred walked hand in hand (21), the first chapter presents an overview of public and sacred finance in the Greek city and a discussion of theories of financial management.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
