Page 1 3/24/16 Determination of K a of a Weak Acid – Lab Summary The strength of an acid is an important characteristic to be considered when acids are handled for practical purposes. A key indicator of an acid’s strength is the K a value, or ionization constant, which indicates the extent to which an acid dissociates. Within any acid, tan equilibrium exists between the acid and its’ components, namely the conjugate base and a hydronium ion. The stronger the acid, the more the ionization occurred in the reaction, producing more hydronium ions and thus a higher K a value. In this experiment, an unknown weak acid’s ionization constant is determined through titration with a strong base. The controlled addition of the strong base NaOH to the weak acid allowed for measurements of the solution’s pH at different intervals. At each measurement, the increase of pH indicated that the concentration of base steadily increased as NaOH was added. The experiment’s goal was to find the K a value of the acid was achieved by determining the equivalence point of each titration, or the point at which the moles of added base equaled the moles of acid in solution. The equivalence point then

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
